What’s the Problem with AndroGel?
Manufactured by Abbvie, Inc. (a subsidiary of Abbott Laboratories), AndroGel is an FDA-approved prescription drug used for replacement therapy in middle-aged and older men with testosterone deficiencies. AndroGel 1% was introduced in 2000, followed by 1.62% strength in 2011. The product is made as a gel for topical use, and is currently the best-selling testosterone booster on the U.S. market today.
Unfortunately, despite its success and widespread usage, AndroGel has recently been linked to stroke and other severe cardiovascular events. In 2009, a study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) involving 200 older men with a pre-existing history of heart disease was halted early after researchers found a significant increase in heart attacks among testosterone supplement users.
In November 2013, another study found in the Journal of the American Medical Association determined that older testosterone users who had undergone a coronary angiography had a 29% higher rate of stroke, heart attack, and death compared to men who had not received TRT.
AndroGel Stroke Symptoms
Strokes occur when a blood clot blocks an artery, or when a blood vessel bursts, inhibiting blood flow to part of the brain. When either of these things happen, brain cells die, and abilities controlled by that part of the brain are lost permanently. These abilities typically include speech, movement and memory.
Symptoms of an AndroGel stroke typically appear suddenly and without warning, and may include:
- Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg (especially on one side of the body)
- Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech
- Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
- Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
- Sudden severe headache with no known cause
About AndroGel Stroke Class Action Lawsuits
Although we are a nationally recognized class action firm, the Products Liability Litigation Group at our law firm has decided against the filing of an AndroGel stroke class action lawsuit, and is currently filing individual claims on behalf of individuals and/or their family members who have suffered a stroke after taking AndroGel.
A class action is a type of lawsuit filed with the court on behalf of large group of people or “class” of individuals that have been injured or wronged. The class is represented by the law firm and the case is generally decided upon a single member of the class who is sometimes referred to as the “class representative or class rep.”
Why Our Law Firm Is Filing Individual Lawsuits Opposed To a Class Action
In some instances, a class action may offer some advantages, as they aggregate a large number of individualized claims into one representational lawsuit. The aggregation can increase the efficiency of the legal process, lower the costs of litigation and in some cases offer the solution to a common problem wherein small recoveries do not provide the incentive for any individual or law firm to file an individual lawsuit.
However, a class action suit can also be a detriment to many class members, as they are often forced into a blanket “low ball settlement” and higher attorney fees. At Schmidt & Clark, LLP we understand that our clients are suffering emotionally and economically due to loss of wages and/or high medical bills and we plan to maximize each client’s recovery by filing individual AndroGel Stroke Lawsuits on their behalf.
